Caniteering

Caniteering is orienteering with a dog. These events are aimed at families, couples or groups that have one dog and would like to take part in an event together, as well as individuals.

This season we have two Caniteering events planned at Haldon (28/3/09) and Kielder (11/04/09) for those interested in pioneering this new sport. These are trial events and we would welcome any feedback or suggestions - if they prove successful we will add more next season.

People can enter as:
- Individuals (17+), or
- Teams of 2 or more. NB All team members must start and finish as a team and stay together during the race. There is no minimum age, but all under 17s must be accompanied by an adult.

Entry Forms
We are currently using the existing online entry forms for CaniX. For distance please select 2.5km and if sharing a dog, enter the dog details on each team members details.

Cost in advance (advance entries close on the Monday before event):

  • Combined £2.50 (for people entered in the CaniX race on the Sunday)
  • For Caniteering only (ie if you are not running in the CaniX race on Sunday)
    - Adults £7.50 (members £5.00) per entry
    - Children £3.75 (members £2.50) per entry

Pay on the day (between 11:00-11:30am) entry form:

  • Adults £15.00 (members £10.00)
  • Children £7.50 (members £5.00)

How it works:
- At 11:30am on the morning of the event you will be given a list of control points to visit.
- Each control point is marked on the orienteering map (purchase on the morning of the event or free to download: Haldon | Kielder A+B (coming soon)).
- Distance will be around 2.5km.
- At 12 midday everyone will set off at the same time.
- You must visit each control point on the list where you will find a letter on a post which you write on your control card.
- The first person/team to return with a completed control card is the winner.
- There will be a prize for the winner/s.

- ALL INDIVIDUALS AND TEAMS MUST REPORT BACK TO THE FINISH ON THEIR RETURN. There is a time limit set for everyone to return and if not back by this time it will be assumed that you are lost and teams will be sent out to search for you. There will be no marshals in the forest during the event.

What are control points?
Control points are square posts about 2' high with a red and white square. Each post carries a number and a letter. Control points are marked on the orienteering map with a circle and a number.

What you need (per team):
- Each individual or team must have at least one dog in the team.
- Water and a dog bowl.
- Orienteering map (purchase on the morning of the event or free PDF download: Haldon | Kielder (coming soon)).
- Control card.
- Pen or pencil.
